Indicated for: prevention and treatment of thromboembolism
Route of administration: injectable
Substance: enoxaparin (anticoagulant)
ATC: B01AB05 (Blood and blood forming organs | Antithrombotic agents | Heparin group)
Enoxaparin is an anticoagulant medication used to prevent and treat blood clots (thrombosis). It belongs to the class of low molecular weight heparins (LMWH) and works by inhibiting clotting factors, particularly thrombin and factor Xa, thereby preventing the formation of blood clots.
Enoxaparin is indicated for the prevention of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), and thrombotic complications in patients with unstable angina or non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). It is also used to treat existing thrombosis and to prevent clot formation in immobilized patients or those undergoing surgery.
The medication is administered as subcutaneous injections, usually in the abdominal area, as directed by a healthcare provider. Side effects may include bleeding, hematomas at the injection site, nausea, or, rarely, allergic reactions and heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT). It is important to use enoxaparin as prescribed and to inform the healthcare provider about other medications or pre-existing conditions to avoid complications.
