Chloramphenicol, metronidazole, nystatin, and hydrocortisone are used together in certain medications to treat complex infections involving bacteria, fungi, and inflammation. This combination is particularly indicated for skin, vaginal, or rectal infections where antimicrobial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory actions are required.

Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis, effective against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Metronidazole is an antimicrobial and antiprotozoal agent that acts against anaerobic bacteria and protozoa. Nystatin is an antifungal effective against fungal infections, particularly Candida albicans. Hydrocortisone is a corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory and antipruritic properties, reducing inflammation, swelling, and itching.

While this combination is effective, its use requires caution. Chloramphenicol may cause rare side effects, such as hypersensitivity or bone marrow aplasia.
