Do not take with milk, calcium, iron, magnesium, or antacids if separation is recommended.
Calcium gluconate + calcium carbonate is a combination used to supplement calcium intake when diet does not provide enough or when a doctor recommends correcting a deficiency. Calcium is important for bones, teeth, muscle contraction, nerve signalling and blood clotting. Calcium carbonate may also have an antacid effect, but the main purpose depends on the product and dose.
It is taken by mouth, usually with or after food, according to the recommended dose. The dose should not be exceeded because too much calcium can be harmful. If you also take iron, levothyroxine, tetracycline or quinolone antibiotics, bisphosphonates or other mineral supplements, the doses may need to be separated by several hours to avoid reduced absorption.
Possible side effects include constipation, bloating, nausea, abdominal discomfort or an unpleasant taste. High doses or long-term use can increase calcium in the blood or urine and may favour kidney stones. Signs of excess calcium can include intense thirst, frequent urination, weakness, confusion, bone pain, persistent nausea or an irregular heartbeat.
Talk to a doctor before use if you have kidney disease, kidney stones, sarcoidosis, high calcium levels, or treatment with thiazide diuretics or cardiac glycosides. Calcium supplements do not replace a balanced diet and should not be combined casually with similar products. In children, pregnancy and older adults, the dose should match the real individual need.
