Paracetamol + dextromethorphan + pseudoephedrine is a combination for cold and flu symptoms with fever, aches, dry cough and blocked nose. Paracetamol reduces pain and fever, dextromethorphan reduces the cough reflex, and pseudoephedrine decreases swelling of the nasal lining, helping restore freer breathing through the nose.
It is taken by mouth according to the leaflet and only for short-term use. Do not combine it with other medicines containing paracetamol or decongestants. Check labels of cold products because many contain overlapping ingredients. If cough lasts longer, produces heavy mucus, or persistent fever occurs, medical advice is needed.
Side effects may include nausea, insomnia, restlessness, palpitations, increased blood pressure, dry mouth, dizziness or rash. Dextromethorphan can interact with some antidepressants and may increase the risk of serotonin syndrome. Pseudoephedrine requires caution in patients with high blood pressure, heart disease, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma or prostate problems.
Seek urgent medical help if chest pain, irregular heartbeat, severe agitation, confusion, high fever, muscle stiffness, seizures, jaundice or allergic reactions occur. Do not exceed the recommended dose and avoid alcohol. During pregnancy, breastfeeding, childhood and in liver or kidney disease, use should be discussed with a doctor.
