Sodium bicarbonate, also called sodium hydrogen carbonate, is an alkalinising agent. Depending on the preparation, it is used for certain types of metabolic acidosis, to alkalinise urine or, by mouth, for temporary relief of heartburn. These uses require different doses and conditions and should not be confused.
Oral forms are taken as prescribed or according to the leaflet. Intravenous solutions are administered only by healthcare staff with acid-base and electrolyte monitoring. The amount and rate are individually calculated. Never use household baking soda to prepare injections or mix the solution with other medicines without checking compatibility.
Oral use may cause belching, bloating and abdominal discomfort. Excess can increase sodium, retain fluid and worsen swelling or blood pressure. Excessive alkalinisation may lower potassium and cause cramps, weakness or heart rhythm problems. Leakage of an intravenous solution outside the vein can damage tissue.
Tell the doctor about heart failure, kidney disease, a low-salt diet and other medicines, as bicarbonate may alter drug absorption or elimination. Seek help for shortness of breath, confusion, palpitations or infusion-site pain. Persistent heartburn, difficulty swallowing or black stools require medical assessment rather than repeated self-treatment.
