Leaflet BEXTRA 40mg film-coated tablets

Indicated for: pain and inflammation

Substance: valdecoxib (analgesic and antipyretic)

ATC: M01AH03 (Musculo-skeletal system | Antiinflammatory and antirheumatic products, non-steroids | Coxibs)

Valdecoxib is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) from the class of selective cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors. It is used for the treatment of pain and inflammation associated with conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and primary dysmenorrhea. By inhibiting COX-2, valdecoxib reduces the production of prostaglandins, substances involved in inflammation and pain.

The medication is administered orally, usually once or twice daily, depending on the severity of symptoms and the physician's recommendations. It is important for patients to adhere to the prescribed dosage to minimize the risk of adverse effects.

Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, headaches, and dizziness. In rare cases, severe adverse reactions such as cardiovascular events (myocardial infarction, stroke) or severe allergic reactions may occur.

Valdecoxib was withdrawn from the market in many countries due to an increased risk of cardiovascular events but remains an important example in the development of COX-2 inhibitors and the understanding of risks associated with this class of drugs.
