The combination of acetylsalicylic acid and esomeprazole is used to prevent cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events, such as myocardial infarction or stroke, in high-risk patients. This combination is particularly indicated for patients requiring long-term treatment with acetylsalicylic acid but who are at increased risk of gastrointestinal complications, such as gastric or duodenal ulcers.
- Acetylsalicylic acid is an antiplatelet agent that prevents blood clot formation, reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke.
- Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that reduces gastric acid production, protecting the stomach lining from irritation caused by acetylsalicylic acid and preventing ulcers.
This combination should be taken as directed by a doctor, usually once daily before meals. It is important not to use it in patients allergic to acetylsalicylic acid or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Long-term use should be monitored to prevent adverse effects, such as gastrointestinal bleeding or drug interactions.
