Atovaquone + proguanil is an antiparasitic combination used to prevent malaria and treat uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum. The two medicines block processes the parasite needs to survive. Selection depends on the travel destination, parasite resistance and the patient's health.
Take it by mouth with food or a milky drink at the same time each day. For prevention, start 1–2 days before entering the risk area, continue daily throughout the stay and for 7 days after leaving. The dose depends on body weight and whether the medicine is used for prevention or treatment; treatment follows a different schedule. Repeat the dose if vomiting occurs within one hour of taking it.
Possible side effects include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache and dizziness. Severe allergic reactions, blistering rashes and signs of liver injury require urgent assessment. This combination must not be used for prevention in severe kidney impairment. Tell the doctor about pregnancy, breastfeeding and medicines such as warfarin or rifampicin.
The medicine does not provide complete protection: use insect repellent, protective clothing and mosquito nets. Fever during the trip or after returning requires prompt medical assessment, even when preventive doses were taken correctly. Persistent diarrhoea or vomiting may reduce protection and should be discussed with the doctor.
