Fludrocortisone is a corticosteroid medication used to treat conditions associated with adrenal insufficiency, such as Addison's disease, and to manage certain forms of orthostatic hypotension. It works by mimicking the effects of the hormone aldosterone, helping to regulate the body's salt and water balance, which contributes to maintaining normal blood pressure.

Fludrocortisone is taken orally, usually in tablet form, and the dosage is adjusted based on the patient's needs and response to treatment. It is primarily used to prevent excessive loss of sodium and water through urine and to maintain adequate potassium levels.

Side effects may include high blood pressure, edema (fluid retention), weight gain, muscle weakness, headaches, and, rarely, allergic reactions. Long-term use may increase the risk of osteoporosis, hypokalemia (low potassium levels), or other metabolic complications.
