Ascorbic acid, or vitamin C, is needed for collagen formation, tissue repair and absorption of iron from food. As a medicine, it prevents or treats vitamin C deficiency, including scurvy. Supplementation does not replace a varied diet and is not a cure for colds or other infections.
It is usually taken by mouth at a dose appropriate for age and need. Injectable formulations are reserved for medical situations where oral treatment is unsuitable and require supervision. Check the total amount in multivitamins and other supplements; very high doses do not automatically provide extra benefit.
High doses may cause nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhoea. In susceptible people they can promote oxalate stones or kidney injury. Excess can worsen iron overload; in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, high doses, particularly by injection, can destroy red blood cells. Allergic reactions are possible depending on the preparation.
Discuss kidney disease, kidney stones, haemochromatosis or G6PD deficiency with the doctor, and seek advice during pregnancy or breastfeeding. High-dose vitamin C can interfere with laboratory tests, including some glucose measurements, so tell healthcare staff. Seek help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe flank pain or dark urine.
