Paroxetine is an antidepressant medication used for the treatment of major depression, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and other similar conditions. It belongs to the class of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and works by increasing serotonin levels in the brain.
The medication is taken orally, usually once daily, and should be used as directed by your doctor. It is important not to abruptly discontinue treatment to avoid withdrawal symptoms.
Side effects may include nausea, drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, or decreased libido. In rare cases, severe reactions such as serotonin syndrome or worsening of depressive symptoms may occur.
Patients should inform their doctor about any other medications being used or pre-existing conditions, such as bipolar disorder or epilepsy, to ensure the safe use of paroxetine.
