Red vine leaf extract is a herbal product traditionally used for mild symptoms related to poor venous circulation in the legs. It may be used for heavy, tired, tense, swollen legs or mild calf cramps, especially when symptoms are associated with standing for long periods or varicose veins. It is intended for symptom relief, not for emergency vascular problems.
It is usually taken by mouth as capsules or tablets containing the extract, according to the leaflet. The effect is not immediate and may take several weeks. General measures remain important: physical activity, raising the legs, weight control and, when recommended by a doctor, compression stockings. The product does not replace vascular assessment when symptoms are significant.
Side effects may include nausea, abdominal discomfort, headache, dizziness, itching or skin rash. People allergic to grapes, grapevine or similar herbal products should be cautious. In pregnancy, breastfeeding, liver or kidney disease, anticoagulant treatment or other chronic conditions, medical advice is recommended before use.
Seek medical help quickly if one leg suddenly becomes swollen, painful, red or warm, or if wounds, skin colour changes, chest pain or shortness of breath occur. These signs may indicate serious problems such as thrombosis. Red vine leaf extract may relieve mild discomfort, but it does not treat important underlying causes of venous disease.
