Testosterone is the primary male sex hormone, produced mainly by the testes in men and, in smaller amounts, by the ovaries in women and the adrenal glands in both sexes. It is essential for the development of male sexual characteristics, such as increased muscle mass, bone density, body hair, and a deeper voice. It also plays a key role in maintaining libido, energy levels, and reproductive function.

Testosterone is used as a medication to treat hypogonadism (low testosterone levels) in men, which can cause symptoms such as fatigue, reduced muscle mass, erectile dysfunction, and loss of bone density. It is available in the form of injections, gels, patches, or tablets.

Common side effects include acne, fluid retention, increased red blood cell count, and mood changes. Excessive use or abuse of testosterone can lead to serious effects, such as liver damage, infertility, or cardiovascular problems. It is contraindicated in patients with prostate or breast cancer.
