Zaleplon is a hypnotic medication used for the treatment of insomnia, particularly for difficulties in initiating sleep. It belongs to a class of drugs known as benzodiazepine receptor agonists but has a chemical structure distinct from classical benzodiazepines. Zaleplon works by binding to GABA-A receptors, enhancing the inhibitory effect of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) on the central nervous system, thereby inducing sleep.
Zaleplon is administered orally, usually immediately before bedtime, and its short duration of action makes it suitable for patients who have trouble falling asleep but not for those with difficulty maintaining sleep.
Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, headache, and nausea. In rare cases, severe adverse reactions such as abnormal sleep behaviors (e.g., sleepwalking), allergic reactions, or dependence may occur.
Patients using zaleplon should be monitored for signs of abuse or dependence, and long-term use is not recommended. The medication is an effective option for managing short-term insomnia, helping to improve sleep quality and daily functioning.
