Ramipril + hydrochlorothiazide is used to treat high blood pressure when one medicine alone does not control it sufficiently. Ramipril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor that relaxes blood vessels, while hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic that helps the body remove salt and water.

It is taken by mouth at the prescribed dose, usually once daily. Blood pressure should be monitored, and treatment should not be stopped suddenly without medical advice. Diet, salt reduction, weight control and physical activity remain important. Blood tests for kidney function and electrolytes may be needed, especially at the start of treatment or after dose changes.

Side effects may include dizziness, blood pressure that is too low, persistent dry cough, tiredness, headache, more frequent urination, nausea or cramps. Changes in potassium, sodium, uric acid, blood glucose and kidney function may occur. Hydrochlorothiazide can worsen gout or sun sensitivity, while ramipril can rarely cause angioedema.

Seek urgent medical help if swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, breathing difficulty, fainting, chest pain, markedly reduced urination, extreme thirst, confusion or severe rash occurs. It must not be used during pregnancy. Tell the doctor about kidney disease, diabetes, gout, lupus, sulfonamide allergy, lithium, anti-inflammatory medicines, diuretics or potassium supplements.
