Indicated for: pulmonary arterial hypertension
Route of administration: oral
Substance: ambrisentan (vasodilator)
ATC: C02KX02 (Cardiovascular system | Other antihypertensives | Antihypertensives for pulmonary arterial hypertension)
Ambrisentan is a medication used in the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a condition characterized by increased pressure in the pulmonary arteries, leading to shortness of breath, fatigue, and other symptoms. It belongs to a class of drugs called endothelin receptor antagonists and works by blocking the effects of endothelin-1, a substance that causes blood vessel constriction and increased blood pressure.
Ambrisentan is taken orally, usually once daily, with the dosage adjusted based on the patient's response to treatment. It is often used in combination with other PAH medications, such as phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors or prostanoids.
Side effects may include headaches, fluid retention, nasal congestion, and anemia. In rare cases, more severe adverse effects, such as liver function impairment, may occur.
Patients taking ambrisentan should undergo regular monitoring for liver function and hemoglobin levels. Additionally, the medication is contraindicated during pregnancy as it can cause birth defects. Ambrisentan is an important option for managing PAH, improving patients' quality of life.
