Almotriptan is a medication used for the treatment of acute migraines, with or without aura. It belongs to a class of drugs called serotonin receptor agonists (triptans) and works by constricting dilated blood vessels in the brain, thereby reducing pain and other migraine symptoms such as nausea and sensitivity to light or sound.
Almotriptan is taken orally, usually at the first signs of a migraine attack. The standard dose is 12.5 mg, and a second tablet may be taken if symptoms return, but not earlier than 2 hours after the first dose. It should not be used for migraine prevention.
Side effects may include dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, or a feeling of pressure in the chest. In rare cases, severe reactions such as high blood pressure or cardiovascular issues may occur.
Patients should inform their doctor of any pre-existing conditions, such as heart disease or hypertension, before using almotriptan. It is important to strictly follow the doctor's recommendations to minimize risks and optimize treatment effectiveness.
