Albendazole is an antiparasitic medication used to treat a wide range of parasitic infections, including intestinal worm infections (such as ascariasis, pinworm, and trichinosis), cysticercosis, echinococcosis, and giardiasis. It belongs to the benzimidazole class and works by inhibiting glucose uptake by parasites, leading to energy depletion and, ultimately, their death.

Albendazole is indicated for both adults and children, and the dosage and duration of treatment vary depending on the type and severity of the infection. The medication is taken orally, usually with food to enhance absorption. In some cases, repeated treatment may be necessary to completely eliminate the parasites.

Common side effects include nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, dizziness, and headache. In rare cases, more serious reactions such as liver dysfunction, a decrease in blood cell counts (leukopenia), or severe allergic reactions may occur. Liver function and blood counts should be monitored during treatment, especially with long-term use.

Albendazole is contraindicated during pregnancy, as it may harm fetal development. Women of childbearing age should use effective contraception during treatment. The medication should be taken as prescribed by a doctor, and patients must strictly follow the treatment regimen.
