A06AB56 sennosides • Alimentary tract and metabolism | Drugs for constipation | Contact laxatives

Sennosides are active compounds extracted from the leaves and pods of the Senna alexandrina (or Cassia senna) plant, used as natural laxatives for the treatment of acute constipation. They are known for their stimulant effect on the intestines, helping to accelerate bowel movements.

The mechanism of action of sennosides involves stimulating intestinal peristalsis (muscle contractions of the intestines) by irritating the intestinal mucosa. Sennosides also increase the secretion of water and electrolytes into the intestinal lumen, softening the stool and facilitating its evacuation.

Sennosides are used short-term, typically for occasional constipation. The effect usually occurs within 6-12 hours after administration, which is why they are often taken in the evening before bedtime.

Side effects may include abdominal cramps, diarrhea, electrolyte imbalances (such as potassium loss), dehydration, or, in rare cases, allergic reactions. Long-term or excessive use can lead to dependency, impaired normal bowel function, or hypokalemia (low potassium levels).

Sennosides are not recommended for long-term use, during pregnancy (without medical advice), or in patients with severe intestinal conditions such as bowel obstruction, ulcerative colitis, or Crohn’s disease. Adequate hydration is important while using this laxative.
