Ispaghula seed + ispaghula husk, from Plantago ovata, are plant fibres used as bulk-forming laxatives for constipation and stool regulation. They absorb water, swell in the intestine and increase stool bulk, stimulating bowel movement. They may also be useful when a softer stool is desired, for example in haemorrhoids or after minor anal irritation.
They are taken by mouth with plenty of water, exactly as stated in the leaflet. They must not be swallowed dry and should not be taken immediately before bedtime. A gap of at least 30–60 minutes from other medicines is often recommended because fibre can reduce their absorption. The effect usually appears within 12–24 hours, but may take a few days.
Side effects may include bloating, gas, abdominal cramps, fullness or diarrhoea if the dose is too high. If insufficient liquid is taken, there is a risk of blockage in the throat, oesophagus or bowel. The product is unsuitable for people with swallowing difficulty, digestive narrowing, bowel obstruction or unexplained abdominal pain.
Seek urgent medical help if choking, difficulty swallowing, severe abdominal pain, vomiting, inability to pass gas or blood in the stool occurs. If constipation persists for more than a few days, the cause should be assessed. Fibre works best together with hydration, physical activity and a diet rich in vegetables and whole grains.
