The combination of alendronic acid and colecalciferol (vitamin D3) is used for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, particularly in postmenopausal women or individuals at high risk of bone fractures. This combination helps maintain bone health by reducing bone loss and increasing bone density.
- Alendronic acid is a bisphosphonate that inhibits bone resorption by reducing the activity of osteoclasts (cells that break down bone). This helps prevent bone loss and strengthens bones.
- Colecalciferol (vitamin D3) enhances calcium absorption in the intestines and contributes to its effective utilization in the body, which is essential for bone health.
This combination is typically taken once a week, in the morning, on an empty stomach with a full glass of water. It is important to remain upright for at least 30 minutes after taking it to prevent esophageal irritation. Long-term use should be monitored by a doctor to avoid side effects such as gastrointestinal issues or hypercalcemia.
