A06AB06 glycosides from Senna • Alimentary tract and metabolism | Drugs for constipation | Contact laxatives

Senna glycosides are active compounds extracted from the leaves and pods of the Senna alexandrina (or Cassia senna) plant, used as natural laxatives for the treatment of acute constipation. They are known for their stimulant effect on the intestines, helping to accelerate bowel movements.

Senna glycosides, also known as sennosides, work by stimulating intestinal peristalsis (muscle contractions of the intestines) and increasing the secretion of water and electrolytes into the intestinal lumen. This mechanism facilitates stool evacuation and relieves constipation.

These laxatives are used short-term, typically for occasional constipation or before medical procedures such as colonoscopy. The effect usually occurs within 6-12 hours after administration.

Side effects may include abdominal cramps, diarrhea, electrolyte imbalances (such as potassium loss), dehydration, or, in rare cases, allergic reactions. Long-term or excessive use can lead to dependency, impaired normal bowel function, or hypokalemia (low potassium levels).

Patients should strictly follow the doctor’s or package instructions regarding dosage. Senna glycosides are not recommended for long-term use, during pregnancy (without medical advice), or in patients with severe intestinal conditions such as bowel obstruction or ulcerative colitis. Adequate hydration is important while using this laxative.
