Sucralfate is a medication primarily used for the treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers, as well as for protecting the gastrointestinal mucosa. It works by forming a protective layer over the ulcer surface, preventing contact with gastric acid and promoting healing.
Sucralfate is indicated for the treatment of active ulcers, prevention of their recurrence, and management of gastritis or reflux esophagitis. It may also be used to protect the gastrointestinal lining in patients taking medications that increase the risk of ulcers, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
Side effects are rare and usually mild, with constipation, nausea, or abdominal discomfort being the most common. In very rare cases, allergic reactions may occur.
Sucralfate should be taken on an empty stomach, usually 1 hour before meals or at bedtime, to maximize its effectiveness. It is important to avoid taking it simultaneously with other medications, as it may reduce their absorption.
