Drospirenone is a progestogen hormone used mainly for contraception. It may be used alone as a progestogen-only pill or combined with an oestrogen. It works by preventing ovulation, changing cervical mucus and making the womb lining less suitable for pregnancy. It does not protect against HIV or other sexually transmitted infections.
It is taken daily, preferably at the same time, following the order on the blister pack. Some packs contain 24 active tablets and 4 placebo tablets, with no break between packs. Protection depends on correct use. If tablets are missed, or if vomiting or severe diarrhoea occurs, read the leaflet and ask a doctor or pharmacist, because extra protection may be needed.
Common side effects include irregular bleeding or no bleeding, headache, nausea, abdominal pain, acne, breast discomfort, painful periods, mood changes, changes in sexual desire and weight gain. Some people may also experience tiredness, dizziness, fluid retention, increased blood pressure, rash, hair loss, vaginal infections or increased potassium on blood tests.
Do not use drospirenone if you are pregnant, have a blood clot, active liver disease, severe kidney problems, hormone-sensitive cancer or unexplained vaginal bleeding. Tell your doctor about all medicines, especially potassium-sparing diuretics, epilepsy treatments, tuberculosis medicines, HIV medicines and St John’s wort. Seek urgent help for chest pain, shortness of breath, swelling in one leg or sudden vision problems.
