Ergocalciferol, also known as vitamin D2, is a form of vitamin D used for the prevention and treatment of vitamin D deficiency, rickets, osteomalacia, and other conditions related to bone metabolism. It is derived from plant sources and is commonly used as a dietary supplement or medication.

Ergocalciferol helps regulate calcium and phosphorus levels in the body, promoting their absorption in the intestines and maintaining healthy bones and teeth. It also supports normal immune system function and prevents hypocalcemia.

It is administered orally in the form of capsules, tablets, or solutions, and the dosage varies depending on the severity of the deficiency and the doctor’s recommendations. In some cases, it may be given intramuscularly.

Side effects are rare but may include hypercalcemia (elevated calcium levels in the blood), nausea, vomiting, constipation, excessive thirst, frequent urination, and muscle weakness. Overdose can lead to soft tissue calcifications and impaired kidney function.

Patients should strictly follow their doctor’s instructions, especially if taking other calcium or vitamin D supplements. Ergocalciferol is not recommended in cases of hypercalcemia, vitamin D toxicity, or severe renal impairment.
