Benzathine benzylpenicillin is an antibiotic from the penicillin class used to treat bacterial infections caused by susceptible microorganisms. It is a long-acting form of benzylpenicillin, allowing for administration at extended intervals. It is indicated for the treatment of infections such as syphilis, streptococcal pharyngitis, rheumatic fever, and other infections caused by group A beta-hemolytic streptococci.
The medication is administered exclusively intramuscularly, usually in the gluteal muscle, and should not be injected intravenously due to the risk of severe reactions. The dosage and frequency of administration depend on the type and severity of the infection, as well as the patient’s weight.
Adverse effects may include allergic reactions such as skin rashes, itching, hives, or, in rare cases, severe anaphylactic reactions. Other possible side effects include pain or inflammation at the injection site, fever, or gastrointestinal disturbances.
