V04CF01 tuberculin • Various | Other diagnostic agents | Tuberculosis diagnostics

Tuberculin is a purified protein extract primarily used for diagnosing infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium that causes tuberculosis. The tuberculin skin test, also known as the Mantoux test, is a standardized method for detecting an immune reaction to tuberculin, indicating possible exposure to the tuberculosis bacillus.

The test involves intradermal injection of a small amount of tuberculin into the forearm. After 48-72 hours, the injection site is examined to determine the presence and size of an induration (swelling). The test result is interpreted based on the size of the induration and the patient's risk factors.

Tuberculin is not used for treatment but exclusively for diagnosis. Adverse reactions are rare but may include redness, itching, or irritation at the injection site. In very rare cases, severe allergic reactions may occur.

The tuberculin test is an important tool in tuberculosis control, helping to identify infected individuals and prevent the spread of the disease.
