MALEAT DE ERGOMETRINA 0.2mg / ml injectible solution medication leaflet

G02AB03 ergometrine • Genito urinary system and sex hormones | Uterotonics | Ergot alkaloids

Ergometrine is a medication primarily used for the prevention and treatment of postpartum and post-abortion hemorrhage caused by uterine atony (lack of uterine contractions). It is an ergot alkaloid that stimulates the contraction of uterine smooth muscle.

The mechanism of action of ergometrine involves stimulating alpha-adrenergic and serotonergic receptors in the uterus, leading to strong and sustained uterine contractions. This effect helps reduce bleeding by compressing uterine blood vessels.

Ergometrine is usually administered intramuscularly or intravenously in small doses under strict medical supervision. It is often used in combination with oxytocin to enhance the uterotonic effect.

Side effects may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, high blood pressure, headache, and, in rare cases, coronary artery spasms or myocardial ischemia. For this reason, the medication should be used with caution in patients with hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, or peripheral vascular conditions.

Ergometrine is contraindicated during pregnancy (except for postpartum use) as it can cause strong uterine contractions that may lead to miscarriage. It is also not recommended in cases of preeclampsia, eclampsia, or hypersensitivity to ergot alkaloids.
