Furosemide is a loop diuretic used to treat edema associated with heart failure, kidney failure, liver cirrhosis, and other conditions that cause fluid retention. It is also used in the treatment of high blood pressure, particularly in severe or resistant cases.

It works by inhibiting the reabsorption of sodium and water in the loop of Henle in the kidneys, leading to increased urine output (diuresis) and a reduction in fluid volume in the body.

Furosemide is available in the form of tablets, oral solution, or injectable solution. The dosage and frequency of administration are adjusted based on the condition being treated and the patient's response.

Side effects may include electrolyte imbalances (hypokalemia, hyponatremia), dehydration, dizziness, low blood pressure, nausea, headache, or, rarely, kidney impairment. Long-term use requires careful monitoring of electrolyte levels and kidney function.

Furosemide is contraindicated in patients with anuria (lack of urine production), severe hypovolemia, dehydration, or allergy to the drug. It is important to use it as prescribed by a healthcare provider.
