Finasteride is a medication used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and androgenetic alopecia (male pattern hair loss). It belongs to the class of 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors and works by blocking the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone involved in prostate enlargement and hair loss.

- In benign prostatic hyperplasia, finasteride helps reduce the size of the prostate, improving urinary symptoms such as difficulty urinating or frequent urination, and may lower the risk of acute urinary retention or the need for surgery.
- In androgenetic alopecia, finasteride slows hair loss and may promote hair regrowth, particularly in the crown area of the scalp.
