Sulpiride is an atypical antipsychotic medication from the benzamide class, primarily used to treat mental health disorders such as schizophrenia, depressive disorders, and severe anxiety. It is also used in some cases for somatic disorders associated with stress, such as irritable bowel syndrome.

Sulpiride works by blocking dopamine D2 receptors, providing a balancing effect on neurotransmitters in the brain. At low doses, it has anxiolytic and antidepressant effects, while at higher doses, it is effective in treating psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions.

Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, weight gain, and gastrointestinal disturbances. In rare cases, it may cause extrapyramidal symptoms (muscle rigidity, tremors) or hyperprolactinemia, which can lead to menstrual irregularities or gynecomastia.

Sulpiride should be used with caution in patients with epilepsy, cardiovascular diseases, or renal impairment. It is important that the treatment is administered under medical supervision, with the dosage adjusted based on the patient's response.
