D01AC01 clotrimazole • Dermatologicals | Antifungals for topical use | Imidazole and triazole derivatives

Clotrimazole is an antifungal medication used to treat infections caused by fungi and yeasts, such as Candida albicans. It is indicated for conditions like vaginal candidiasis, tinea pedis (athlete's foot), tinea cruris (jock itch), tinea corporis (ringworm), and pityriasis versicolor. It is also used for fungal infections of the skin, nails, and mucous membranes.

Clotrimazole works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of the fungal cell membrane. This leads to the destruction of the fungal cell membrane, preventing the growth and multiplication of fungi.

The medication is available in the form of creams, ointments, solutions, sprays, vaginal tablets, or lotions, depending on the type and location of the infection. It is applied topically, usually 1-2 times a day, as directed by a doctor or the product leaflet.

Side effects are rare and may include local irritation, redness, itching, or a burning sensation at the application site. In very rare cases, severe allergic reactions may occur. It is important for patients to complete the full course of treatment, even if symptoms resolve before finishing, to prevent recurrence of the infection.

Clotrimazole should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding without medical advice, and patients should inform their doctor about other medications to avoid interactions.
