Indicated for: bacterial infections
Substance: cefixime (cephalosporin antibiotic)
ATC: J01DD08 (Antiinfectives for systemic use | Other beta-lactam antibacterials | Third-generation cephalosporins)
Cefixime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat moderate bacterial infections. It is indicated for upper respiratory tract infections (such as pharyngitis or tonsillitis), urinary tract infections, otitis media, acute bronchitis, and some gonococcal infections.
Cefixime works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, killing the bacteria responsible for the infection. It is available in tablet, capsule, or oral suspension form and is well-tolerated by most patients.
Side effects may include nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, or allergic reactions. In rare cases, it can cause pseudomembranous colitis or severe hypersensitivity reactions. It is contraindicated in patients with allergies to cephalosporins or penicillins.
