Benzoyl peroxide is a topical agent primarily used for the treatment of acne vulgaris. It works by reducing the number of bacteria on the skin (especially Cutibacterium acnes), through its antibacterial effect, and by decreasing inflammation. It also helps remove dead skin cells from the surface, preventing clogged pores.

Benzoyl peroxide is available as a gel, cream, lotion, or foam in various concentrations (typically between 2.5% and 10%). It is applied topically to the affected areas, usually once or twice daily, as directed by a doctor or the product leaflet. Starting with a lower concentration is recommended to minimize the risk of irritation.

Common side effects include dryness, redness, peeling, and a burning or itching sensation. These reactions are usually temporary and subside as the skin adjusts to the treatment. Benzoyl peroxide can bleach clothing, towels, or hair, so contact with these should be avoided.

It is contraindicated in individuals with hypersensitivity to the active substance. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, its use should be done with caution and only under medical advice. Excessive sun exposure and the use of other irritating products should be avoided during treatment.
