ADENOCOR 3mg / ml injectible solution medication leaflet

C01EB10 adenosine • Cardiovascular system | Other cardiac preparations

Adenosine is a medication primarily used to treat certain types of cardiac arrhythmias, particularly paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT). It works by slowing the conduction of electrical impulses through the atrioventricular (AV) node, helping to restore a normal heart rhythm.

Adenosine is administered intravenously and has a very rapid but short-lived effect, making it useful in emergency situations to control heart rate. It is also used in cardiac stress tests to evaluate coronary function.

Side effects are usually transient and include a sensation of warmth, facial flushing, nausea, dizziness, or mild chest discomfort. In rare cases, it may cause more severe reactions, such as bradycardia or hypotension. It is contraindicated in patients with high-grade AV block, sick sinus syndrome, or severe asthma. Administration should always be performed under strict medical supervision.
